Teeth Whitening

What if teeth whitening is deemed inappropriate for me?

Teeth whitening products aren’t always the answer to discoloured or stained teeth, which is why you should make an appointment with one of our dentists before you make any decisions. The underlying cause of your tooth discolouration needs to be uncovered and, if necessary, addressed.

Certain types of teeth staining don’t respond particularly well to these products. Generally, yellow stains respond the best, whereas greyish surface stains are harder to alter.

If, in your case, it’s determined that teeth whitening isn’t the best option for you, then don’t despair – there are other paths to consider, such as composite or porcelain veneers. Come in and see one of our amazing dentists to discover the options available to you.

There are many reasons why our teeth may discolour over our life. The most common would be:

Staining and discolouration due to age and everyday use

Exposure to certain antibiotics at a young age

Smoking

Eating and drinking richly coloured food and drink

Implants are the gold standard for tooth replacement. They can provide:

What are the teeth whitening options?

First things first: if you’re unhappy with the look of your teeth, always make a consultation with one of our dentists to discuss your options. One of our awesome dentists will assess the health of your teeth and talk with you about what you want, and then draw up a treatment plan to suit you and your budget.

Tooth whitening products use particular medicants that destroy the bonds that cause stains on the surface and within the structure of your teeth. The chemicals that make up these medicants are either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, depending on the brand. The end result of either is a brighter and more confident smile.

Teeth whitening can be done at home with over-the-counter products that use a less concentrated version of what our dentists use in the clinic. They must be used daily for a certain time to have any effect and you must follow their instructions carefully. Pease, if you choose to use teeth whitening products at home, book in with one of our dentists first for a chat. Before you decide on a course of teeth whitening, we need to determine exactly why your teeth have discoloured and, if possible, address it. It may turn out that teeth whitening would not be appropriate in your case.

You can also have professional teeth whitening done by one of our dentists in the clinic. An in-chair teeth whitening treatment requires only one visit and produces results very quickly.

In order for teeth whitening to have the greatest effect, it needs to be applied to clean and healthy surfaces, another reason why you should make an appointment with one of our dentists prior to any treatment. It’s possible that you will experience some sensitivity before or after using these products, so if you’re worried about that make sure you discuss it during your appointment.

Teeth whitening may be deemed a cosmetic treatment, but that should in no way imply that it is unnecessary or unimportant. At Polished Dental, we believe that a happy and confident smile means a happy and confident self-esteem.

If the colour of your teeth makes you feel self-conscious and you’re constantly covering your mouth with your hand, then teeth whitening is definitely something you should consider.
