Men and the Dentist – Stubborn Males

Men and the dentist – like avoiding asking for directions or help with instructions on how to build a flat pack, the men in our life LOVE to avoid any thought of anything medical especially when it comes to the Dentist! (Sorry guys but its true)

Did you know that men are more than twice as likely to avoid going to the dentist and it is very common for us to have a wife/girlfriend or mum call up to make their enquiries and appointments!

Men and the dentist – what to do

We have a couple of tips to help encourage the significant other in your life to see the importance of visiting the dentist.

1: Identify their fear/Source of Avoidance: Anxiety is common when talking about avoiding seeing a dentist, Gently ask what is the source of the anxiety? – A bad childhood experience? Self consciousness (bad breath/yellow teeth/crooked teeth) The fear of the unknown? Pain? Cost?

2: Focus on the Source of Avoidance: Dentistry has changed dramatically, especially in the last 10 years, we utilise distraction techniques, have created a relaxed environment, and our staff are committed to giving everyone a positive experience- look at our team photos Do we look like people who want to scare or hurt you? NO!

Discuss what is making them self conscious and let them know that we don’t judge! We are here to help and it makes us happy to have patients regain their self confidence. The worst thing about not knowing what work you need is just that Not knowing! Often the situation is not as bad as you think and the longer treatment is put of the greater the cost will be.

3: Lets talk Money: We are apart of the new generation who know that life gets hectic and bills come in. Finances are the Number #1 reason for anyone avoiding a trip to see us and we understand that. That’s why we work hard to keep our fees low and talk through everything with you so there are no hidden costs or unexpected bills we also offer payment plans through Zipmoney to help where we can. We are not out to give huge treatment plans and have you feeling like your living here- we have a genuine care of just wanting to help our patients have healthy Oral health and the confidence to smile!

Still not getting anywhere?

4: Just go ahead and Make the Appointment: You may get a bit of grumbling and moaning but at the end of the day you are looking out for their health! How can they argue with that? We are open 7 days a week with both morning and late evening appointments available so we can fit in around work, sporting and family commitments.
