If one of your teeth is knocked out,
here’s what to do.

It’s not uncommon for a tooth to get knocked out (what’s known in the trade as a tooth avulsion) when playing contact sport. Mouthguards have helped to reduce the number of incidents, and are still the best preventative option. If you play any form of contact sport, at either a professional or amateur level, we strongly recommend the use of a well fitted mouthguard.

If you experience a knocked-out tooth, follow these steps.

Stay calm, and try to find the tooth.
Wash it very gently in either milk or a saline solution. Don’t scrub it, and try not to make any contact with the root end.
Try to put the tooth back in its cavity. Check your other teeth to see what way to face the tooth, then push it firmly into the cavity to put it back in place.
If that isn’t possible, keep the tooth in milk or a saline solution or in your mouth against a cheek. We want to keep the cells in the root alive until you can see a dentist.
Whether you have managed to put the tooth back in or not, book in for emergency dental treatment with us as soon as you can.
